Watchdog: Georgia man charged with killing teen in Georgia

A Georgia man was charged with first-degree murder Tuesday for fatally shooting his 14-year-old nephew in a Georgia home, authorities said.

In a statement, the Savannah County District Attorney’s Office said that 24-yearold Matthew J. Williams, who is black, fired three shots from a .40-caliber handgun Monday night as his nephew was playing in his father’s backyard.

The shooting happened shortly before 11 p.m. in the family’s home on the 200 block of West Peachtree Street.

Williams faces first- and second-degree counts of murder and first-person homicide.

He is being held without bond at the Savannah-Chatham Detention Center.

The district attorney’s office said it would not comment further on the case until it was presented to a grand jury.

According to the district attorney, the investigation began after the family found the teen dead from gunshot wounds to the head.

Investigators said the family was living in a two-bedroom house at the time of the shooting.

The child’s body was found on the second floor.

The family’s two other children, ages 14 and 17, were also home at the day the shooting happened.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
